Y’all clamored for it, so Zine Club Chicago is bringing back its after-hours hangout! Is making progress on your zine projects one of your 2025 resolutions? Kick off a creative year with us at Zine Club Chicago: No Sleep ’Til Stapling Zinemaking Hangout from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, January 25.
Bring your work-in-progress, create a new zine on the spot, or just catch up with other zine folks. We’ll stay open until 9 p.m., so feel free to drop in anytime during the evening. Bonus points if you wear your cutest pjs! (This gathering will channel the chill vibe of Quimby’s Zlumber Parties of yore.)
We’ll have zinemaking supplies, creative prompts, and snacks on hand. Zinemakers are encouraged to bring their zines to swap with others!
Plus, our own Echo will be offering tarot readings from 5 to 8 p.m.! Echo has been reading tarot cards for many years. She uses tarot as a mind-opening tool, a method for helping us see more, a path illuminator. Find her on the Internet: @fraulein_echo + echothehuman.com

Life on Marz Community Club, our favorite locally owned taproom and café space, offers awesome alcoholic, CBD, and non-alcoholic beverages from Marz Brewery and more, plus some very fun snacks, for purchase. The taproom also will be holding a DJ Night that evening, and we encourage y’all to stick around for an awesome selection of garage and punk!

If you’ve been a sentient member of the human species lately, you have probably noticed that society is in a state of… how can I put this… total chaos and unbridled horror?
At Quimby’s, we recognize our small but important role as dedicated purveyors of radical, inclusive, and subversive literature. Perhaps (hopefully) there are many radicals in your life. Heck, you may even be one of them! So, I’ve picked out some books, zines, and other fun stuff (from our rather extensive selection of subversive materials) for the RADICAL in your life. Zines can make for very thoughtful and fun gifts or stocking stuffers. I’d like to point your attention to Pleasure Pie, a sexual justice organization that’s based in Boston. They make incredible zines about sex positivity and intersectional liberation and we just love them! The first book in my radical gift guide is To Rob a Bank Is an Honor by Lucio Urtubia. Urtubia is remembered as a real-life Robin Hood. On paper, he was a bricklayer from Navarra, an autonomous community in Spain. He was also a revolutionary outlaw who spent many years printing political pamphlets in his printshop, counterfeiting passports and checks for workers, and, most famously, scamming Citibank to fund the efforts of Italy’s Red Brigades, the Black Panthers, and other radical groups. This fascinating memoir is sure to make an excellent gift for the anarchist on your list.
No radical book collection is complete without An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States. By telling the history of the United States from an indigenous perspective, historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz helps us see through the colonial lies that have dominated the popular narrative about the hyperpower that is the United States. As I type this, we have two wonderful versions of this important book in stock: the 10th-anniversary edition and a beautiful graphic interpretation adapted by Paul Peart-Smith.
Next up, we have a landmark classic—An Autobiography by Angela Davis. Originally published in 1974 (by Toni Morrison!), this book was re-released as a new edition in 2022, and it remains very pertinent to current events. A memoir from such an iconic social justice leader as Davis would make an excellent gift for anyone who’s into Black liberation, prison abolition, feminism, communism, queer rights, or for anyone who has the courage to hope and take actions to make a better world for everyone.
Those who are passionate about queer liberation are sure to appreciate Surviving the Future: Abolitionist Queer Strategies a collection of essays on current queer revolutionary theory from PM Press. This book does a wonderful job of bringing the movement for LGBTQIA+ liberation right into the fold of intersectionality with prison abolition, antiracism, and other concurrent revolutionary movements. It highlights the need for mutual aid as we look towards a brighter future for queer folks and for individuals from all marginalized groups.
Don’t forget to pick some fun, revolutionary stocking stuffers! Like Johnny Sampson’s glorious “No Bezos” sticker. And you can radicalize your Christmas tree with a hammer-and-sickle or anarchy ornament by artist Paul Garner. Garner’s Che Guevara figurines would also make great gifts!

Gifts for the Music Obsessed
What does the Red Devil Lady have in her red-hot little hands? Wicker Park’s most wicked rock chick is showing off some of my personal gift recommendations for folks who are as music obsessed as I am.
In between shows, I love to delve into thoughtful music writing. We’ve got quite a few titles in the shop right now from the stellar and wide-ranging 33 1/3 series, including fresh releases about the Kate Bush album Hounds of Love and Dolly Parton’s White Limozeen. Questlove’s intimate take on how Hip Hop is History is a must-read not only for fans of the genre, but anyone interested in the fascinating ways that music and popular culture build off each other like a pair of spinning turntables.
You can find deep dives of all kinds in our music zines section, too. Here at the Q, we rejoiced when fabled music publication CREEM returned to the scene. We’ve got the two most recent issues of this substantial mag in stock right now. One of the zines I’ve been giving to friends is Forgotten Music Masters Volume 1, a hilarious illustrated history by Chris Auman and Deron Grams. (Check out Used Records and Tapes, the awesome collab zine series that Chris edits, as well!) I’m also really into Lennon McCrea’s monthly perzine-style album review zine, Stacks.
And if your favorite music fanatic likes to wear their impeccable taste on their sleeve (or battle vest or car bumper), we’ve got patches, pins, and stickers galore. I’ve snapped up these particular pieces of flare that pay homage to the Replacements (pin by World Famous Original), my fellow goth ghouls (sticker by local comedian Winslow Dumaine), and the Cure (patch by Neoshiki) as gifts for myself. After all, Robert Smith is my Santa Claus this year.
