Chris Ware Signs MONOGRAPH 11/3
While Chris Ware’s singular body of work is often categorized as comics, his writing/drawing defies classification. Whether he’s creating graphic novels, making paintings or building sculptures, Ware explores social isolation, emotional pain and human desperation with a fine visual clarity and uncertain mnemonic organization, the end result being intentionally empathetic and complex. Like Charles Schulz, Art Spiegelman and R. Crumb before him, Ware has attempted to elevate cartooning to a fine art form.
MONOGRAPH is a personal, never-before-seen look at how the artist’s private and work life intersect, beginning with the influence of his newspaper family to his art school days in Austin and Chicago to his life from the early 1990s to the present day. The book delves into how, as a storyteller and builder, Ware’s work in three dimensions feeds into the thinking of his finely textured narrative art, offering a prismatic look at his work, including rarely-seen early attempts, previously unpublished strips and notes, all serving as a window into how artwork made for reproduction is still fundamentally “art.”

Jay Ryan has been making screenprints and concert posters in and around Chicago since 1995. Erick Lyle talks Streetopia at Quimby’s 10/20
After San Francisco’s new mayor announced imminent plans to “clean up” downtown with a new corporate “dot com corridor” and arts district–featuring the new headquarters of Twitter and Burning Man–curators Erick Lyle and Chris Johanson brought over 100 artists and activists together with residents fearing displacement to consider utopian aspirations and plot alternative futures for the city. The resulting exhibition, Streetopia, was a massive anti-gentrification art fair that took place in venues throughout the city, featuring daily free talks, performances, skillshares and a free community kitchen out of the gallery. This book brings together all of the art and ephemera from the now-legendary show, featuring work by Swoon, Barry McGee, Emory Douglas, Monica Canilao, Rigo 23, Xara Thustra, Ryder Cooley and many more. Join Lyle to consider the effectiveness of Streetopia‘s projects while offering a deeper rumination on the continuing search for community in today’s increasingly homogenous and gentrified cities.

Steve Cerio Brings Sunbeam on the Astronaut to Quimby's 8/14
Award-winning artist Steven Cerio will sign copies of his new book, SUNBEAM ON THE ASTRONAUT (Wow Cool/Alternative Comics, 2015), and screen examples of his films.
Cerio will also be selling limited editions of prints and posters of his work, which he has created for music artists including The Residents, King Crimson, Ministry, Les Claypool, Moe, Monster Magnet and White Zombie during his more than 30-year career.
The Quimby’s appearance will serve as a launch for Cerio’s latest print collection, SUNBEAM ON THE ASTRONAUT, a hallucinatory graphic album of all-new, never before published comics and art. The 56-page book features comic book adventures of Cerio’s characters from his various films with the legendary top-hatted eyeball performance greats THE RESIDENTS; a dozen short narratives; a collection of paintings and collages and stills from his newest film, THE MAGNIFICENT PIGTAIL SHADOW; and much more. Cerio’s work with The Residents is included in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Steven Cerio is an artist, writer and filmmaker with an unmistakable style, which set the stage for the neo-psychedelic revival in New York City in the late eighties. Cerio created his own loving and sarcastic expressions of joy for three decades. In the 80’s he started with zines and soon after called upon by galleries and by diverse clients: Nickelodeon, Warner Brothers, A&M Records, Entertainment Weekly and Penguin books. He has drawn posters for King Crimson, Ministry, Les Claypool, Monster Magnet and White Zombie. His prints occupy the set of Comedy Central’s hit series Workaholics. Award-Winning author of “Steven Cerio’s ABC Book-A Drug Primer ” (Gates of Heck) and “PIE ” (WowCool). He has been involved with performance pioneers The Residents, designed vinyl toy figures, prints and images for animations and film all of which were inducted into the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Steven has written for Juxtapoz, as well working as associate editor and art interviewer for Seconds magazine from 1995 to 1999. His film “The Magnificent Pigtail Shadow” was released in 2012 . Cerio’s work has appeared in numerous comics anthologies, including Snake Eyes, Graphic Classics, Hotwire Comics, Last Gasp Comix & Stories and Buzzard. After a decade working as an artist in New York City, Steven moved his studio to Baldwinsville, New York.

CAKE Bake Auction Fundraiser at No Nation Art Gallery on April 25th
The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) will be holding its annual art auction fundraiser at 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 25th, at the NO NATION art gallery, located at 1542 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The event, called CAKE Bake, will be hosted by Lyra Hill, a well-known Chicago cartoonist and filmmaker.
The event will feature live and silent auctions of over 30 pieces of art by cartoonists from Chicago and elsewhere, including Jeffrey Brown, Ivan Brunetti, Lilli Carre, Anders Nilsen, Lucy Knisley, Edie Fake, Keiler Roberts, and Anya Davidson. In addition, live comics readings will be performed by Lyra Hill, John Porcellino, Sara Heymann of the Mortville Collective, and Ben Marcus.
Max Morris, a member of CAKE’s organizing committee, said, “We are very excited to hold CAKE Bake, which has been a great success for us in the past. As a volunteer-run non-profit event, we rely on fundraisers like this to make each year’s CAKE a success, and we greatly appreciate the support we get from the local comics community, especially all the pieces of art that our great cartoonists have donated. We’re really excited about this year’s CAKE, in which we’re going to be offering hands-on workshops for the first time, as well as programming featuring our amazing special guests, including Jillian Tamaki, Eleanor Davis, Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Dash Shaw, and Zak Sally. We think this year’s CAKE is going to be the best one yet, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop trying to keep making it better and better.”
The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo [CAKE] is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alternative comics’ most talented artists– past, present and future. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers.The Fourth Annual CAKE will take place on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N Halsted Ave. in Chicago.

Edie Fake presents Memory Palaces at Quimby’s 5/17
Edie Fake’s first art book, Memory Palaces, has just arrived from Secret Acres in bold, oversize color. Cataloging Fake’s suite of meticulous drawings that re-imagine the queer landscape of Chicago, Memory Palaces blends striking visuals and ecstatic architecture with excavated history and unlocked potential.
To celebrate the launch of this new publication, Fake is delighted to host a book release party at Quimby’s. Attendees can count on snacks, drinks and souvenir ephemera as well as a sweet and squirrely lecture on the triumph and folly of architectural repurposing. It will be a night of funny photographs, strange ideas and lovely new books, not to be missed!
Edie Fake is an artist and zinemaker from Chicago. He works as a minicomics sommelier for Quimby’s Books and was one of the founding organizers of the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE). His comic, Gaylord Phoenix, won the 2011 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel and he was one of the first recipients of Printed Matter’s Awards for Artists. The work in Memory Palaces was originally presented at Fake’s first solo exhibition at Thomas Robertello Gallery in 2013. He is currently working on a series of comics collages and collecting photos of anthropomorphic characters.
