Celia Forrest is a writer, director, teacher and actress who was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. She is a new mother and couldn’t shut up about it if she tried. She is well-known in Minnesota for her work teaching theater to kids and her award-winning turn in Neil Labute’s Fat Pig. In Chicago she is mostly known for her sketch comedy writing and directing, as well for her work on The People’s Republic of Edward Snowden. Celia is also famous in a subset of radical activists as a co-host of Morning Damnit, the morning news and talk show on Q4 Radio, and the weekly program The Celia and Erik Show, which features comedy, commentary and interviews with local artists. Jeff Phillips and Jordan Hoisington Read From Zizobotchi Papers vol 1 2/27
Zizobotchi Papers: volume 1, winter, 2015 (Baker & Brady), is the premier issue of a journal dedicated to the novella. Jeff Phillips and Daniel Gerald Mac Rae, who previously collaborated together at Three Leaves Theatre on a variety of stage productions, have teamed up again to launch a publication to highlight one of their favorite forms, the novella. Jeff and Dan are the guinea pigs on volume 1.
The first issue of the Zizobotchi Papers features Proboiotic Hot Sauce by Jeff Phillips, and Chainsaw Guy by Daniel Gerald Mac Rae. Probiotic follows the character Sloan Doan as he returns to Chicago after a falling out with his family to stay with an eccentric dancer, Libby. They attend a warehouse party where a food competition reveals a cast of characters as mysterious as the place itself. Chainsaw makes us witness to a party that escalates into bedlam for Dale, leaving him – and his Honda – vulnerable to the whims of a psychopath.
Jeff Phillips’ short fiction has appeared in Seeding Meat, This Zine Will Change Your Life, Metazen, Chicago Literati and Literary Orphans. has written two full-length plays Magnets and Division & Shame. His first published novella is Chainsaw Guy. Actor Jordan Hoisington has appeared in the play Magnets by Zizobotchi Papers’ featured writer Daniel Gerald Mac Rae, and will read Rae’s work.

Speculative Relationships: A Science Fiction Romance Comics Anthology
In the mid-twentieth century, romance was the most popular genre in comics. Comic publishers produced dozens of titles throughout the 1950s and 60s, and many of the medium’s top artistic talents such as Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, and Frank Frazetta worked in romance comics. However, by the 1970s, the once-dominant genre of romance comics all but died out.
The artists featured in the new Speculative Relationships anthology are ready to start the revival. The anthology features up-and-coming artists creating brand-new science fiction romance comics:
The eight stories in the anthology include a cyborg fighting alien hordes for love, a computer AI in love with a sleeping interstellar voyager, two robots that were literally made for each other, and so much more!

Lane Milburn Talks About Twelve Gems 8/30

Lane Milburn was born and raised in Lexington, KY. He graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008 with a degree in Painting. While living in Baltimore, Milburn self published several minicomics with the underground art collective, Closed Caption Comics. The Xeric Foundation awarded him a grant in 2009 for his book Death Trap which he self published in 2010. Milburn currently lives and works in Chicago, IL where he is an active member of the alternative comics community.

Release Event For the 2nd Printing of Jeff Zwirek's Burning Building Comix 8/15
Chicago artist, Jeff Zwirek self-published his debut Graphic Novel, Burning Building Comix, in late 2012. Less than a year later, Zwirek’s supply was nearly gone thanks in large part to the direct market distribution he received with Diamond Comics Distribution through alternative comic’s publisher Top Shelf. After a spate of universal acclaim, Zwirek has gone back to press with a 2nd printing. In that time, Burning Building Comix, was named in a few, year-end top ten lists, including USA Today, and it gained Zwirek the role of Slate.com’s featured artist for their July book review section, which also called the book, “The most inventively made comic of the year.” Join Jeff at Quimby’s to celebrate the second printing.“A Bold Exploration of the Form” – The Chicago Tribune
Jeff Zwirek is the author of several self-published works, including Burning Building Comix, Jack Rabbit, BlackStar, Pinstriped Bloodbath, and many others. His work has been nominated for Ignatz and Space prize awards, and his work has been named a “notable comic” several times in the Best American Comics anthology. His freelance work has been seen on NFL.com, IFC, and ESPN. He is also one of the founders of, and continues to co-organize, CAKE (the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo).

Learnapalooza Make a Zine Workshop, with Edie Fake 6/28 4pm
Learnapalooza is an annual day of free workshops taught across your neighborhood and open to the public. Classes are taught by community members and local businesses, hosted in 10-20 businesses and community centers across the neighborhood. This will be Learnapalooza’s 5th year in Wicker Park, and there are more than 15 participating hosts, more than 50 classes, and will be between 350-500 attendees.
This year, artist Edie Fake (Gaylord Phoenix, Memory Palaces) will teach you how to make a zine!

Heavy Metal Movies Author Mike “McBeardo” McPadden Reads With Chicago Metal Miscreants 6/14
Mike “McBeardo” McPadden’s new book Heavy Metal Movies: Guitar Barbarians, Mutant Bimbos & Cult Zombies Amok in the 666 Most Eye- and Ear-Ripping Big Screen Films Ever! (Bazillion Points) is a lavishly illustrated, epic reference tome devoted to cinema’s most headbanging blowouts. Edie Fake presents Memory Palaces at Quimby’s 5/17
Edie Fake’s first art book, Memory Palaces, has just arrived from Secret Acres in bold, oversize color. Cataloging Fake’s suite of meticulous drawings that re-imagine the queer landscape of Chicago, Memory Palaces blends striking visuals and ecstatic architecture with excavated history and unlocked potential.
To celebrate the launch of this new publication, Fake is delighted to host a book release party at Quimby’s. Attendees can count on snacks, drinks and souvenir ephemera as well as a sweet and squirrely lecture on the triumph and folly of architectural repurposing. It will be a night of funny photographs, strange ideas and lovely new books, not to be missed!
Edie Fake is an artist and zinemaker from Chicago. He works as a minicomics sommelier for Quimby’s Books and was one of the founding organizers of the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE). His comic, Gaylord Phoenix, won the 2011 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel and he was one of the first recipients of Printed Matter’s Awards for Artists. The work in Memory Palaces was originally presented at Fake’s first solo exhibition at Thomas Robertello Gallery in 2013. He is currently working on a series of comics collages and collecting photos of anthropomorphic characters.

$5 – $20 sliding scale entryFor the second year running, the performative comics reading series Brain Frame is teaming up with the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) to host the CAKE Frame fundraiser, an evening of comics readings and a live art auction. Cake Frame 2 is All proceeds go to benefit CAKE, the weekend-long celebration of independent comics featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more. CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers.
Brain Frame founder Lyra Hill will host the evening as master of ceremonies and auctioneer. Attendees can bid on original art from 30 talented Chicagoans including Chris Ware, Nicole Hollander, Ivan Brunetti, and Edie Fake. All bids for artworks will start at $30. The evening will also include a wide variety of comics performances by Brain Frame alums Kevin Budnik, Rachel Niffenegger, Pup House and Jen Rickert. There will be live drawing by Jenna Caravello and live music by El Is A Sound Of Joy. Doors open at 6pm and the event starts at 7pm, but we recommend attendees arrive early if they want to review the auction items before bidding.
With only two months until CAKE on May 31/June 1 at the Center on Halstead, the CAKE organizers are kicked into full gear. Organizers Ben Bertin, Neil Brideau, Marnie Galloway, Max Morris, Grace Tran and Jeff Zwirek are committed to making this year’s show one that goes down in history, and the CAKE Frame 2 fundraiser will help them towards that goal.
