  • Kristy Bowen reads from Major Characters in Minor Films 4/3

    MCMFCover
“Get ready: Kristy Bowen’s major characters in minor films casts our favorite muse du jour in a ‘white-hot, white dress.’ Through poems that are lyrical, irreverent, and a little bit naughty, we discover the swanky, labyrinthine interior of her straight-to-DVD universe: remember, she tells us in ‘movie of the week,’ ‘Everybody loves a victim, especially the blonde, pretty kind.’ Through scathing missives to James Franco and sensual harangues directed at the moon, our wine-stained diva tempts us through vivacious non sequiturs to the ‘poem within a movie within a girl-shaped world’ in all of us.” -Sara Henning, author of A Sweeter Water

“I want to be best friends with the ‘I’ of this book. She’s hilarious. She’s heartbreaking. She’s more than a little bit dangerous. Whether she’s writing about crying on the bus or hiding a knife under the sink, she deals out her words like a card shark—fast, sure, sly. What’s not to love about such a deft performance of wit, skill, and heart?” -Sara Biggs Chaney, author of Ann Coulter’s Letter to the Young Poets

“In Kristy Bowen’s major characters in minor films, language moves like a camera, cutting from image to image, leaving impressions that form intriguing fragmented narratives of love, intrigue, mystery and damage. Populated with both the familiar and the strange, with rabbits and birds as well as whiskey and fire, the journey through the scenes these poems create is a wild and rich ride.” -Donna Vorreyer, author of A House of Many Windows

A writer and visual artist, Kristy Bowen is the author of several book, chapbook, and zine projects including the shared properties of water and stars (Noctary Press, 2013) and girl show (Black Lawrence Press, 2014).  Her work has appeared most recently in Birdfeast, Diode, and Eratio.  She  lives in Chicago, where she runs dancing girl press & studio. • Damen Blue Line Closed (Stop Closest to Quimby's) Oct 22nd to Dec 22nd, 2014

damenstopAs a part of the Chicago Transit Authority’s $494 million Your New Blue project, the California and Damen Blue Line stations will be temporary closed this autumn to complete major renovation work. From September 4 to October 16, the California station will be closed and the Damen station will be closed from October 20 until December 22. That’s the blue line stop closest to Quimby’s. The Western stop, which received a complete overhaul fifteen years ago, will remain open during the station improvements. Both the California and Damen stations were originally opened in 1895 and will receive both exterior and interior facelifts that will include new LED lighting, repairs to the floors and stairs, new bike racks and new artwork. In addition to the station improvements, the CTA believes that the upgrades will help alleviate congestion and improve overall service. During the California and Damen closures, the CTA will not offer free shuttle service like it did during the more recent weekend closures the Sun-Times is reporting. However, the CTA will run more buses along the #56 Milwaukee Ave. line during rush hour periods.

Anchoring Tom Shroder’s Acid Test are the stories of Rick Doblin, the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), who has been fighting government prohibition of psychedelics for more than thirty years; Michael Mithoefer, a former emergency room physician, now a psychiatrist at the forefront of psychedelic therapy research; and his patient Nicholas Blackston, a former Marine who has suffered unfathomable mental anguish from the effects of brutal combat experiences in Iraq. T. Barnum of the surgery room.” Brilliant, outspoken, and brazenly handsome, Mütter was flamboyant in every aspect of his life. He wore pink silk suits to perform surgery, added an umlaut to his last name just because he could, and amassed an immense collection of medical oddities that would later form the basis of Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum. Award-winning writer Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz vividly chronicles how Mütter’s efforts helped establish Philadelphia as a global mecca for medical innovation—despite intense resistance from his numerous rivals. Pirate Nightmare Vice Explosion: Inherited Remnants of an Amateur Dadaist’s Library by Michael Kupperman (Four Corners Books) $40.00 – Comics artist Kupperman (Tales Designed to Thrizzle, Snake ‘n’ Bacon’s Cartoon) bought a stack of men’s magazines from the 1950s and 1960s where the previous owner did some weirdo modifications. Now he’s sharing it with you, FOUND Magazine-style. “They all had the owner’s name stamped on them,” Kupperman observed, “but the stamp is slightly illegible, so it’s impossible to know if the name is C. Buechtel, C. Brockel, C. Buschol or some other variant. This man–I’m assuming it was a man–spent years acquiring lurid men’s magazines and taking them apart, using the contents to form his own hybrid magazines with the pages from several reassembled inside the cover of one. With a grease pencil he’d cross out the headlines on the covers that didn’t apply anymore, and stamp his name on the results, along with a number. Why was he doing this? It’s not clear. It might have been a need to make the magazines seem like a serious collection, his re-editing emphasizing his sober interest in subjects such as modern fiction and wife-swapping.

Simon Barker: Punk’s Dead by Michael Bracewell et al. $45.00 – From 1976 to 1978, the young photographer Simon Barker was a member of the “Bromley Contingent”–a group of avid Sex Pistols fans who comprised the group’s inner circle at the height of the punk movement. Many of them, such as Jordan and Siouxsie Sioux, were notorious for their daredevil dress sense, and several–such as Sioux, Steven Severin, Adam Ant, Poly Styrene, Billy Idol, Viv Albertine and Ari Up–went on to form some of the most important bands of the era. This compilation of previously unseen photographs by Barker shows these founders of punk in their earliest incarnations–in bedrooms and kitchens, at public gigs and private parties–before media and commerce sunk their claws into punk’s iconoclastic look and class politics.
