If you haven’t been living under a rock then you know CAKE is this weekend. Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor. The tabling exhibition is at The Center on Halsted (3656 N. Saturday, June 6:CAKE is hosting two Saturday after parties in the same building!
Enter through the 4th floor entrance for both parties, a $5 donation supports the bands & the Observatory, an independently run music space.
8pm – late The Observatory, 3036 N. Lincoln, 4th floor. CAKE will be hosting a night of musical performances after the first day of exhibition. Bring some cash, there will be a bar. Performers include: Ambergris featuring Matt Thurber, Traducer featuring Lane Milburn, Pet Theories featuring Brian Cremins, and Naff Whiff featuring Eddy Rivera.
8pm – midnight: 3036 N Lincoln, 3rd floor. For exhibitors looking for a quiet place to meet up, join us on the 3rd floor (below The Observatory) for a Drink & Draw sponsored by Print Ninja. Snacks will be provided by CAKE; BYOB, or purchase drinks at The Observatory and bring them downstairs to the drink & draw. To get to the Drink & Draw space, go to the 4th floor after party and go down the back stairwell to the 3rd floor (the same stairwell that allows rooftop access).

Off-Site: Chicago Zine Fest 2015 – Celebrates its Sixth Year with New Dates and Locations
Quimby’s is proud to help co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest, an annual celebration of self-publishing efforts, is now marking its sixth year. For the 2015 festival, there will be a new date as the festival moves to the month of May, held during the weekend of Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th. The festival also brings its exhibition to a new location, Plumbers’ Union Hall in the West Loop. Come visit Quimby’s at table S07 at the zine exhibition tabling on Saturday, May 9th 11am-6pm there at Plumbers’ Union Hall!
“We’re excited for these changes. It’ll be great to welcome our audience to such a historic Chicago venue,” said festival promotion committee chair John Wawrzaszek.
The festival weekend kicks off Friday May 8th at 5 pm with a panel titled Zines: A Future Craft which will be a discussion with zine creators Jonas, Julia Eff, and Ocean Capewell, moderated by Jenna Freedman. This event is sponsored by The University of Chicago Library. The night continues with a pair of readings. At 7pm join our annual youth reading, Zines: The Next Generation followed by an 8 pm reading by festival exhibitors. CART services for the deaf and hard of hearing will be provided at each of Friday’s events. All events will be held at Access Living, 115 W. Chicago Ave.
The weekend’s main attraction will be a zine exhibition taking place on Saturday May 9th, 11 am- 6 pm. Over 250 zinesters will exhibit their publications, host workshops, and lead panel discussions in the spirit of self-publishing. The exhibition will be held at Plumbers’ Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington Blvd.
Organizing goals for the 2015 fest included increasing the number of festival exhibitors and forming new community partnerships. In choosing a new location for the festival exhibition, there has been room for more tables allowing more exhibitors to showcase their work. The festival registration filled up in record time this year with all tables selling out in under an hour. Nearly half of registered exhibitors will be taking part of CZF for their first time this year. New community partnerships have allowed the festival to schedule programming topics that meet the festival’s mission and support the work of its partner organizations.
“CZF strives to offer diverse programming every year in order to continue to engage our communities in conversations,” says festival programming coordinator Julie Koslowsky.
The zine exhibition will be supported with programming throughout the day including an activity making area, button making presented by Busy Beaver Buttons, and a photo booth provided by Glitter Guts. Workshop topics include radical poetry, interactive performances, resisting assimilation, and hands-on drawing techniques.
“There’s a different experience that we offer at an event like the Chicago Zine Fest where consumers can chat with the zinesters and artists who created the work,” says Koslowsky.
The Chicago Zine Fest is a volunteer-operated event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work aiming to make DIY zine making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact and swap skills. The Chicago Zine Fest 2015 is sponsored by 826CHI, Chicago Publishers Resource Center, CHIRP Radio, InoPrints, The International School of Comics, Perfectly Acceptable Press, The University of Chicago Library, and Quimby’s Bookstore.
CZF 2015 artwork was created by Chicago artist and illustrator Corinne Mucha.

Celia Forrest is a writer, director, teacher and actress who was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. She is a new mother and couldn’t shut up about it if she tried. She is well-known in Minnesota for her work teaching theater to kids and her award-winning turn in Neil Labute’s Fat Pig. In Chicago she is mostly known for her sketch comedy writing and directing, as well for her work on The People’s Republic of Edward Snowden. Celia is also famous in a subset of radical activists as a co-host of Morning Damnit, the morning news and talk show on Q4 Radio, and the weekly program The Celia and Erik Show, which features comedy, commentary and interviews with local artists. Registration for the 2015 Chicago Zine Fest opens this Sunday, February 22 at 12pm (Central Time)! Table space is first come, first served, and it sells out quickly. Off-site Event: Zine Book Club at CHIPRC "Is It the Future Yet" With Corinne Mucha 2/11
CHIPRC’s Zine Book Club returns in 2015 on Wednesday, February 11th at 7pm at The Chicago Publishers Resource Center (CHIPRC) at 858 N. Ashland Avenue (not Quimby’s). The discussion will feature local comic artist Corinne Mucha’s work, Is It the Future Yet?, which was commissioned exclusively by Quimby’s! Corrine Mucha will be present to join the discussion, sign work and will have other titles available for sale.
Also, bring in your favorite zine/comic from 2014 to discuss and share. Pick up this month’s comic here at Quimby’s bookstore, located at 1854 West North Avenue (while supplies last).
There will be a $3 donation asked at the door. Meet other zinesters, read new work, bring in your favs, be part of the discussion and have a good time. Chicago Publishers Resource Center is located at 858 N Ashland Ave.
ABOUT: CHIPRC’s Zine Book Club gets together periodically to discuss and support zine culture. At each event, new self published zine and comic titles will be selected to read and discussed. CHIPRC works with community partners and local self-publishers to select the titles read for the month.

Chicago Zine Fest Karaoke Night Fundraiser 1/23 at Beauty Bar
Check one, check two. Get set to sing the night away Friday, January 23rd, 9pm, at Chicago Zine Fest’s annual karaoke fundraiser at Beauty Bar, 1444 W Chicago Ave.The entertainment will be provided by Shameless Karaoke. Their diverse songbook covers all genres with selections from artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Neil Diamond, Duran Duran, Erasure, Michael Jackson, the Kinks, Madonna, Motley Crue, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Prince, Rolling Stones, Sir Mixalot, Britney Spears and a variety of punk and new wave classics as well.
There is a $5 admission which will benefit the 2015 Chicago Zine Fest. The event beings at 9pm and is 21+. Hosted by Shameless Karaoke KJ, Caboose zinester and Quimby’s manager Liz Mason. Beauty Bar will offer drink specials all night long including a signature martini and a manicure.
Take the stage and own it. Bring friends and sing a duet. Or enjoy from the crowd. Come out and have a good time and support self-publishing in Chicago.

Chicago Zine Fest’s fourth annual Bingo Night fundraiser will be held on Thursday, December, 11 at Logan Bar and Grill, 2230 N California Ave, 7pm. (NOT AT QUIMBY’S.)Zine Fest Bingo is always a great time. Join special guest bingo callers, Chicago based performance duo Mothergirl, Katy Albert and Sophia Hamilton, as they call out the numbers. There is a suggested entry donation of $10 which includes your bingo cards good for multiple rounds. Each round allows for a chance to win!

July marks International Zine Month, so Quimby’s is teaming up with our friends The Chicago Independent Resource Center (CHIPRC) to bring you zine-y activity. CHIPRC will be hosting zine events during the month! Here’s a post from Johnny, the Executive Director!
Celebrate Independent Publishing on Independence Day Weekend with Chicago Publishers Resource Center.
Chicago Publishers Resource Center, the city’s newest edition to the local publishing community, celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday, July 5, 2014, with programming scheduled throughout the weekend.On Saturday, July 5, CHIPRC hosts a zine reading featuring performers from the local self-publishing community including Jim Joyce (Let it Sink zine), Colin Brennan (Continental Interlude zine), Jonas Cannon (Cheer the Eff Up zine), and Ben Spies (No More Coffee zine). Cartoonist Alex Nall will provide a one-off comic strip on the CHIPRC chalkboard. There will be door prize giveaways from self-publishing organizations Chicago Zine Fest, Quimby’s Bookstore, Journal of Artists Books and Stranger Danger zine distro. The even begins at 4pm, $5 donation, all ages.
Then on Sunday, July 6, at 1pm during CHIPRC’s Open Hours (each Sunday from 12-5), join button maker Amy Gooch as she hosts a workshop on how to create a collectors’ series with buttons (using two sizes of buttons, 1 inch and 1 ½ inch). Everyone will take away the buttons they make. Great for all ages, $5 donation at the door.
