QuimBurger Celebration, Oct 28th
Everybody knows if Halloween falls on a weekday you do your partying the Saturday before. 2023 is no exception (especially because we’re closed on Tuesdays anyways). So join us all day on Saturday, October 28th from noon to 6pm while we transform Quimby’s into QuimBurger, with special themed merchandise and activities (and of course, candy).
No, we won’t have hamburgers and fries, but we will be selling a super special secret thing you can only get at Quimby’s, inspired by our newest window display! Chicago artist/writer/Meanwhile reading series organizer/fast food aficionado Megan Kirby transformed our front window into a vision of greasy fast food, inspired by Chris Ware’s store logo. We’re big fans of Megan’s work around these part, from her works like Another Day In Paradise and Coffee Spoons, to her pieces in the Chicago Reader, we are thrilled to have her art in our window! We’ll have some themed things to buy related to the QuimBurger theme we’ll surprise you with that day.
And since it’s the spooky season, we have to pay our tributes to the energies from beyond the veil. And that is why we’ll have tarot readings by Echo from 3-6pm! Echo has been reading tarot cards for decades. She uses tarot as a mind-opening tool, a method for helping us see more, a path illuminator. Religious beliefs have been the source of food “rules” since Pythagoras told his followers not to eat beans (they contain souls), Kosher and Halal rules forbade the shrimp cocktail (shellfish are scavengers, or maybe G-d just said “no”). A long-ago Pope forbade Catholics to eat meat on Fridays (fasting to atone for committed sins). Rules about eating are present in nearly every American belief, from high-control groups that ban everything except “air” to the infamous strawberry shortcake that sated visitors to the Oneida Community in the late 1800s. In America, where the freedom to worship the god of your choice and sometimes of your own making, embraced old traditions and invented new ones.
Holy Food looks explores the explosion of religious movements since the Great Awakenings birthed a cottage industry of food fads and at the obscure sects and communities of the 20th Century who dabbled in vague spirituality and used food to both entice and control followers. Ward skillfully navigates between academic studies, interviews, cookbooks, and religious texts to make sharp observations and new insights into American history in this highly readable journey through the American kitchen.

Acting on the daily rants of Alex Jones and his ilk, McCaslin takes matters into his own hands to stop the unseen powers behind the world’s disasters who congregate at conspiracy world’s Mecca- The Bohemian Grove. It all goes wrong with terrible consequences for the man who styled himself-The Phantom Patriot.
McCaslin is not alone, as conspiracy-driven political action has bubbled its way up from the margins of society to the White House. It’s no longer a lone deranged kook convinced of getting secret messages from a cereal box, now its slick videos and well-funded outrage campaigns ready to peddle the latest innuendos and lies in hopes of harnessing the chaos for political gain. Krulos investigates and explains the power of conspiracy and the resulting shared madness on the American psyche.
Tea Krulos is a Milwaukee-based writer who documents the underground world of fringe sub-cultures. His previous books, Apocalypse Any Day Now-Deep Underground with America’s Doomsday Preppers and Heroes in the Night-Inside the Real Life Super Hero Movement explored the driving beliefs and lives of the people who choose to reject accepted reality and substitute their own.

Quimby’s is proud to welcome back tarot readings by Sarah Luczko. Sarah is a poet, dancer, performance artist, bookstore owner, and Tarot reader. Her readings are down to earth, while still keeping one foot in the other world. Sarah works with querents to produce a reading through collaboration with the cards. She embraces the traveling tradition of party readings. She prefers to read in loud bars, outdoors, in a garden, at art openings, or anywhere away from more traditional settings. Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz Reads From Dr. Mütter’s Marvels 10/4
In Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz’s new book DR. MÜTTER’S MARVELS (Gotham Books), she explores the previously untold told life story of the man with the famous name: a young, handsome and ambitiously brilliant surgeon whose talents in the operating room and lectures halls were unrivaled in his lifetime. Thai Comic Horrors Vol. 2 Release Event with visits to Buddhist Hell, Tropical Ghosts and Other Strangeness 7/23
Join Quimby’s for the release of Thai Comic Horrors Vol.2, a compilation of overlooked pulp horror comics from the Kingdom of Thailand. Translated into English for the first time these stories offer a glimpse into folklore and superstition often unseen by outsiders. The new issue of Thai Comic Horrors is themed around body horror and showcase stories involving Thai ghosts that share an unquenchable desire to consume fresh human intestines! For this event Logan Bay will present a slide show and lecture reflecting on the four years spent abroad. Lecture topics will include visiting Buddhist Hell parks and an introduction to Thai ghosts & superstitions.
Artist (and former Quimby employee!) Logan Bay has created a diverse body of work over his artistic career. Past projects have included: publications, audiovisual performance, installation, graphic design and illustration. Active as a curator and organizer Logan has produced shows in New York, Chicago, & Bangkok. He is currently enrolled at Rangsit University, Thailand working towards a MFA in design.

Marking the roughly simultaneous re-release of Peter Sotos’ Tool and Mine, Sotos will appear at Quimby’s Bookstore with his publisher Nine-Banded Books founder, Chip Smith, to discuss the continuing role of independent publishers in curating controversial and overlooked literature.

Sotos is the author of 11 published novels, including Index, Tick, Lordotics, Comfort and Critique, and Selfish, Little: The Annotated Lesley Ann Downey. He is also the editor of the Pure Filth, an annotated collection transcripts culled from the underground pornography of the late Jamie Gillis. And oh yeah, he often comes in to Quimby’s (always wearing a long coat) with records he bought around the corner at Reckless Records. One time it was a greatest hits from The Smiths, prompting us to fun of him.
