    The members of Zine Club Chicago love snacks (almost) as much as they love zines, so the group is celebrating their collective snackiness with a collab zine. Send in your writing, lists, comics, drawing, collage & more all about SNACKS!

    Updated food pyramids made up only of snacks, an essay about discovering Zapp’s chips on your first trip to New Orleans, a renaissance-style still life of your favorite noshes, a power ranking of the most coveted sleepover snacks of 2000, a poem about your first experience of the munchies . . . if it pertains to the realm of the edible, Zine Club Chicago wants to know about it!

    Submission guidelines: 500 words max for writing; 4.5” x 7.5” max, black & white + 300 dpi for artwork. (One submission per contributor, please; you’re welcome to submit images to accompany a written submission, or text to accompany a visual art submission.) Due to space limitations, please limit visual submissions to 2 pages max.

    All contributors will receive a free copy of the zine! Zine Club Chicago is planning for an autumn 2022 release, and will keep everyone updated via the email address you provide.

  • New Online Literary Journal, Goreyesque, Seeking Submissions

    Columbia College Chicago’s Department of Creative Writing is launching a new online literary journal, Goreyesque (www.goreyesque.com), now open for submissions. (And no, you don’t have to be a student at Columbia to submit your work).

    Both an homage and showcase of contemporary artists and storytellers inspired by Edward Gorey’s lasting influence across genres, Goreyesque seeks works that are darkly humorous, surreal, playful, and anything in between. Short stories, essays, poems, illustrations, video/animation and other forms of art all welcome. Original work preferred but reprints that fit the project’s scope also appreciated (see submission guidelines). Work can be sent to: goreysubmissions(at)gmail(dot)com.

    The launch of Goreyesque coincides with the Chicago debut of Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey and G is for Gorey—C is for Chicago: The Collection of Thomas Michalak, at the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA), Feb. 15 – Jun. 15. While Elegant Enigmas has traveled the country since 2009, the companion exhibition G is for Gorey provides an even closer in-depth look at Gorey’s legacy, including his illustrations for book jackets and magazine articles, and his life and work on Cape Cod.

    Gorey’s artwork returns to his home town for the first time with this special exhibition and reading/performance showcase, so writers and artists should be sure to send Gorey-inspired work soon! All works submitted before Apr. 14 will be considered for a public reading and showcase at LUMA’s gallery space in Chicago on Apr. 29. Top 5 submissions will also receive the exhibition catalogue Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey.

    Special guest judges for the reading: Sam Weller, author of The Bradbury Chronicles, and Mort Castle, author of Bram Stoker award-winning New Moon on the Water. Both served as co-editors of Stoker award-winning Shadow Show: All New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury.

  • Call for Best American Comics

    A word from Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, the series editors of The Best American Comics for comics artists and publishers!

    Hi everyone,

    This is a note to remind you that we are, as always, collecting submissions for the Best American Comics. Great stuff comes out all year round and we want to get our hands on it as soon as possible. In addition, it makes our guest editors’ jobs much more manageable if we can supply them with a large batch of excellent booty by mid-summer.

    So please submit your books published since September 1 of 2011 for Best American Comics 2013. If you don’t publish books, we’ve put you on our reminder list because we know you know people who do, and we hope you’ll pass on this reminder to them. Especially when it comics to minis, webcomics, and very small press, we need your help to make sure we’re seeing what’s great out there in the comics world.

    How to submit:
    Mail one copy of each of your books to us at the address below. Please make sure to attach your contact information and the RELEASE DATE. If it’s not inside the book, stick a post-it on the cover with that info.

    BAC11, under guest editor Alison Bechdel, has been one of our most popular volumes yet and I’m pleased to be able to announce to you “officially” the the guest editor for BAC12 is none other than Françoise Mouly! (As for BAC13, you’ll just have to wait and see…)

    Looking ahead, Jessica and Matt will both be at MoCCA Fest  and will have a table where you can drop books off if you don’t see us walking the floor. Matt will also be at TCAF the following weekend. We look forward to seeing you.

    Exhibition Dates: July 8 – August 18, 2011
    Open to women, transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming people from the international community who make self-published zines, comics, and chapbooks, as well as print, graphic, and comic art in all media. This exhibition will include both a pop-up library of zines, comics, and other self-published works, and a show of installed artworks in all media. Apply to show in one or both exhibition components, but please create separate entries for each.
    For publication submissions: Enter one to three publications following the guidelines on the publication submission form (pdf link above). Mail-in or drop off entries only.
    For art submissions: Use the online entry system (link below) or for mailed entries follow the guidelines on the art submission form (link above). Include an artist or project statement and a $30 entry fee.

  • Call for Proposal for Cambodian Independent Cultural Production

    Anne Elizabeth Moore, activist and writer friend of Quimby’s, is trying to cast as wide a net as possible to get some good proposals by april 15th for an Independent Youth-Driven Cultural Production project in Cambodia. Got any good ideas to work with Anne about? She said that she did get a particular request, from a Cambodian female comic-book artist, to try to get at least one proposal about teaching women comics, so there is need for someone who specializes in that.

  • Another Hear Ye: An Opportunity to Submit your Work

    Just this morning I was arranging the free area and I stumbeled across a flyer someone left there, announcing that they’re looking for work submissions:

    Anobium is a new, Chicago-based literary magazine that plans to print a high-quality, small volume of work (in the realm of 80-100 pages) for the first magazine. Their flyer said “Terrestrial – subreal – insectile”  on one side, and on the other it says, “Printed literature in a digital world (Sustainable in temperatures up to 506 Kelvin.” Sounds intriguing.
