A Zine Club Chicago collab zine
Call for SubmissionsThe members of Zine Club Chicago love snacks (almost) as much as they love zines, so the group is celebrating their collective snackiness with a collab zine. Send in your writing, lists, comics, drawing, collage & more all about SNACKS!
Updated food pyramids made up only of snacks, an essay about discovering Zapp’s chips on your first trip to New Orleans, a renaissance-style still life of your favorite noshes, a power ranking of the most coveted sleepover snacks of 2000, a poem about your first experience of the munchies . . . if it pertains to the realm of the edible, Zine Club Chicago wants to know about it!
Submission guidelines: 500 words max for writing; 4.5” x 7.5” max, black & white + 300 dpi for artwork. (One submission per contributor, please; you’re welcome to submit images to accompany a written submission, or text to accompany a visual art submission.) Due to space limitations, please limit visual submissions to 2 pages max.

All contributors will receive a free copy of the zine! Zine Club Chicago is planning for an autumn 2022 release, and will keep everyone updated via the email address you provide.

Midwest Perzine Fest Online Perzine Reading on April 8!
This spring, Midwest Perzine Fest is celebrating perzines — and the friendships they help forge — with a virtual event featuring some amazing zinemakers! The Midwest Perzine Fest Online Perzine Reading will be streamed live on Friday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. Central Time on the MWPZF YouTube channel: tiny.cc/mwpzfyoutube
The readers for the event, who all will be sharing work on the theme of friendship, are Heather Anacker, Nichole Bael, Julie Halpern & Liz Mason, Jessie Lynn McMains, Lynne Monsoon, Red Schulte, and Alisha Walker. The evening’s moderator will be MWPZF founder Jonas.

Free!Two years ago, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak to be a global health emergency, forever changing the world as we knew it. During these pandemic times, many people have turned to zinemaking as a way to share their experiences, their knowledge, their fears, and their resilience.
This month, we’ll be discussing zines that focus on life in the era of COVID-19, including perzines, mini-comics, how-to guides and more. Grab your faves, BYOS(nacks), and join us on Zoom for Zine Club Chicago Online: Pandemic Zines Edition at 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday, February 22!
** RSVP required ** We want to make sure that our online Zine Club events are a safe space, so we won’t be releasing the Zoom link publicly. Free!For Zine Club Chicago’s last event of the year, you’re all invited to make mini zines with our merry crew! Let’s celebrate this festive season together with a laidback virtual hangout. A swap by mail will be held after the event for folks who’d like to share the mini zine they made, too.

CZF 2019 Friday Event: Exhibitor Reading at Quimby's, Zine Jeopardy at Cards Against Humanity Theater
On Friday night of #CZF2019, Chicago Zine Fest has two special events. The annual Exhibitor Reading will be here at Quimby’s Bookstore, Friday May 17th from 6-8pm. Zine creators share stories and comics from the pages of their publications. Hosted by Megan Kirby. Readers include David Alvarado, Julia Arredondo, Ed Blair, Eileen Chavez, Casey Goonan, Jonas, Jaclyn Miller, LizMarie Palomo, Leslie Perrine, Jami Sailor, and Alejandra Trigoso.
Afterwards head over to the Cards Against Humanity Theater (1551 W. Homer St) for Zine Jeopardy at 9pm. Chicago Zine Fest organizer Johnny Misfit will host and contestants John Porcellino, Julia Eff and Billy the Bunny will go head-to-head as we test their knowledge of all things zine. Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor CZF and congratulates the festival for celebrating 10 years! The Chicago Zine Fest is a celebration of small press and independent publishers, with an annual festival of workshops, events, and the big expo day where 250+ zinesters set up tables to sell and trade their zines. Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor The Chicago Zine Fest, a celebration of small press and independent publishers, with free workshops, events, and an annual festival. CZF 2018 will be held May 18-19. All events are free!
Friday, May 18th: Panel Discussion & Exhibitor Reading, 6:30-9:30pm at the Institute of Cultural Affairs, 4750 N. Sheridan Road in Uptown. The topic is On Speaking Terms: Zines, Librarians and Communities and the panel will feature local zinester and Chicago Public Library employee Oscar Arreola, Doro of the School of the Art Institute’s Zine Collection, Milo from Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP), and moderated by the University of Chicago’s zine archivist, Sarah G. Wenzel. Then stay for the exhibitor reading featuring performances by Zach Auburn, Shira Mario, Megan Metzger, Ariel Chan, Marian Runk, Katie Armentrout and Cathy Hannah. Quimby’s 2018 Zlumber Party 1/27-1/28
Hey zinesters and comics artists! Come to our Zlumber Party (as in Zine Slumber Party)! This is the seventh year in a row we’re inviting you to come in and spend the night with us working on your zine, and start your year off with a creative frenzy! Get here at 9:30 on Sat, Jan 27th (the store closes at 10pm). Then spend the night here! Stay until 6am Sun, Jan 28th! (And yes, you can leave whenever you want before then if you want or need to.) So bring yer jammies and a sleeping bag, then leave in the morning with what you’ve been workin’ on! There will be snacks! And coffee!

Helpful hints!
*In terms of what to bring, definitely whatever project you’re working on, whether it’s a zine, a comic, a book, a magazine, an artist book — independent publishing knows no bounds!
*Be here at 9:30pm (the store closes at 10pm). This is NOT a lock in; you can leave whenever you want. You can stay as late as 6am on sunday morning, which is the official end time for the event.
*Wear comfy clothes! Don’t forget your sleeping gear! A sleeping bag if you wanna take a break to catch a few zzzz (or just be comfy), a pillow, footie pajamas, a blanket, slippers…whatever makes you comfy.
*We’ll provide some snacks and coffee, but you may want to bring some snacks with you if you like. A good way to make new friends is bring food, is all we’re saying. If you have food sensitivities or allergies please bring whatever nourishment you need to bring to sustain you.
*We’ll also provide some office supplies (papers, pens, scissors, staplers, that type of thing), chairs and tables.
*One final note: Don’t feel pressured to feel like you have to finish whatever you’re working on before you leave. If you feel excited to work on your project once you’ve been working on it here, that you’ve started your 2018 off jazzed that you got the creative ball rolling, then we’ve done our job (that’s once of the reasons we do this event in January). Saturday, June 6:CAKE is hosting two Saturday after parties in the same building!
Enter through the 4th floor entrance for both parties, a $5 donation supports the bands & the Observatory, an independently run music space.
8pm – late The Observatory, 3036 N. Lincoln, 4th floor. CAKE will be hosting a night of musical performances after the first day of exhibition. Bring some cash, there will be a bar. Performers include: Ambergris featuring Matt Thurber, Traducer featuring Lane Milburn, Pet Theories featuring Brian Cremins, and Naff Whiff featuring Eddy Rivera.
8pm – midnight: 3036 N Lincoln, 3rd floor. For exhibitors looking for a quiet place to meet up, join us on the 3rd floor (below The Observatory) for a Drink & Draw sponsored by Print Ninja. Snacks will be provided by CAKE; BYOB, or purchase drinks at The Observatory and bring them downstairs to the drink & draw. To get to the Drink & Draw space, go to the 4th floor after party and go down the back stairwell to the 3rd floor (the same stairwell that allows rooftop access).

Learnapalooza Make a Zine Workshop, with Edie Fake 6/28 4pm
Learnapalooza is an annual day of free workshops taught across your neighborhood and open to the public. Classes are taught by community members and local businesses, hosted in 10-20 businesses and community centers across the neighborhood. This will be Learnapalooza’s 5th year in Wicker Park, and there are more than 15 participating hosts, more than 50 classes, and will be between 350-500 attendees.
This year, artist Edie Fake (Gaylord Phoenix, Memory Palaces) will teach you how to make a zine!
