Movies, television shows, YouTube videos, Instagram Live, and oh so many Zoom events … we all like to watch, and we’ve all been looking at screens a lot more than usual since the coronavirus crisis began. We miss seeing your faces and sharing the zines we love, so in May we’re taking Zine Club Chicago ONLINE!
This month, we’ll be discussing self-published works about the moving images that keep us riveted to big and small screens alike. Grab your favorite zines, BYOS(nacks), and join us on Zoom for a fun conversation!

Zine newbies and longtime enthusiasts alike are always welcome at Zine Club Chicago, the city’s only book club-style event for people who read zines. This free monthly series is produced by Chicago Zine Fest/Midwest Perzine Fest organizer Cynthia E. Hanifin and hosted by Quimby’s Bookstore.

Off-Site: Quimby's Co-sponsors the EX. MONEY. RACE. GENDER Ladydrawers Exhibition
Quimby’s Bookstore (and our sister store, Chicago Comics) are proud to be a sponsor of the Ladydrawers Comics Collective exhibition entitled SEX. MONEY. RACE. GENDER, curated by Anne Elizabeth Moore, at Columbia College Chicago’s A+D Gallery, opening June 27th. S.M.R.G. will also feature a series of workshops that explores hot button topics with everything from site-specific murals to performance to empirical conversations to yes, comics.
Beginning with the opening night spectacle, the gallery (Columbia’s A+D Gallery, not Quimby’s) will be activated through fun, radicalthinking, and art making, a space to observe and reflect on ideas of SEX, MONEY, RACE, and GENDER. Instead of creating a catalog for the show, Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor a comics anthology including work by Robyn Chapman, Danielle Chenette, Clay Harris, Lyra Hill, MariNaomi, Corinne Mucha, Laura Szumowski, Lauren Weinstein.SEX. It’s time to re-think the language of comics. Esther Pearl Watson and Terri Kapsalis will create a work exploring sexual health based on Mort Walker’s satirical look at comics devices for cartoonists, The Lexicon of Comicana.

Louder Than Your Mom Karaoke Tournament Fundraiser
Our friends at Co-op Image Youth are holding a Karaoke Tournament Fundraiser at Ronny’s. If you’re in Chicago this Friday (June 27th) you should come, even if you’re not singing; karaoke singers need an audience! Here’s their details:
Be the Karaoke King/Queen you always knew you could be! Or just be mercilessly entertained! On Friday, June 27th Ronny’s (210. Suggested donation of $51 N. California Ave) will host Chicago’s first, one and only, Karaoke Tournament: LOUDER THAN YOUR MOM! at the door, contestants get in for free. Karaoke power-couple Joe and Liz Mason will MC the event as the First Round begins at 9 o’clock. There will be four rounds of competition. This event is held to benefit Cooperative Image Group.
Here’s how it will work: Karaoke contestants will compete in the contest, much like a marathon. They will be required to have a minimum of three sponsors who can donate up to four songs (depending on how far they expect their contestant to go) at $10 a song. A panel of audience judges will be rating the performances on a scale of 1- 10. Four finalists will receive a prize and trophy designed by Co-op Image Youth. The winner will receive a prize, trophy, and cash.
Incorporated in 2003, Cooperative Image Group is an interdisciplinary arts education and social entrepreneurship organization that facilitates programs with youth ages 6-21. Located in Humboldt Park, Co-op Image works with over 700 youth per year out of its Corner Art Center and approximately 400 additional community members through a number of outreach satellite projects. The programs Co-op Image creates include the production of a cooking show aired on CAN-TV, a screen-printing and design business, an audio/visual recording studio, mural painting, glass sculpting, documentary film-making and more. Co-op Image seeks funding through several channels, including a number of creative fundraisers and benefits, earned income, individual donors, and foundation and government grants. Benefits like LOUDER THAN YOUR MOM! account for approximately 30% of Co-op Image’s annual budget.

Its the time of year coked out art vampires don sunblock to go out of their bat caves once again and the smelly art kids return to the streets to fight the man and their boredom with a mix of dance moves and wheat pasted stickiness. Joe Biel of Microcosm Publishing and Boxcar Books will be showing his documentary film on zines, “$100 and a T-Shirt.” The film is a cultural analysis of what causes zine makers to tick; what the hell zines are, why people make zines, the origin of zines, the resources and community available for zine makers, and the future of zines. It features interviews with about 70 zine makers, ex-zine makers, and readers from the northwest.Following the film will be a panel discussion on zines featuring Liz Mason (Caboose Zine), Billy Roberts (Loop Distro & Proof I Exist), Kelsey Snell (The Machine Media), Al Burian (Burn Collector), Alicia Dorr (Random Life In Progress), and Aaron Cynic (Fall of Autumn/Diatribe Zine).
