Edie Fake Celebrates the Release of Gaylord Phoenix
Eight years in the making , Gaylord Phoenix collects all of Edie Fake’s raunchy queer comics serial in one volume. Perverse and surreal , Gaylord Phoenix follows the danger-fraught journeys of the Gaylord Phoenix, a creature willing to sacrifice anything for lost love and hidden memories. In an ever-shifting landscape full of ever-shifting genders, Gaylord Phoenix plunges head-first into a realm full of murderous psychedelic smut and intense magical beauty.
Shenanigans are planned for one fun and epic release night at Quimby’s. Fake will be on hand to crack bad jokes and sign books, along with homemade penis-shaped cookies and special limited-edition mix tapes and objets-de-arte available for free with each Gaylord book and comic purchase.
Edie Fake was born in Chicagoland in 1980. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence in 2002 and has since clocked time in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Baltimore. He’s received a Critical Fierceness Grant for queer art and was one of the first recipients of Printed Matter’s Awards for Artists. His drawings have been included in Hot and Cold, Creative Time Comics, and LTTR. Gaylord is his first full-length book. Currently, he lives in Chicago where he works as a minicomics sommelier for Quimby’s Books.

Who is free enough of the hipster taint to write this history without contempt or nostalgia? Why are we tempted to declare the neo-hipster moment over, when the hipster’s “global brand” has just reached its apotheosis? A panel of writers invited the public to join an investigation into the rise and fall of the contemporary hipster. Their debate took place at the New School University in New York City, and was followed by articles, responses, and essays, all printed here for the first time.”

2011: The Revenge of Print
We’re tired of all the END OF PAPER, the END OF PUBLISHING AS WE KNOW IT stories. We’ve been hearing and reading about it ever since we’ve been open (which is going on almost 20 years now).So for 2011, we’re throwing a challenge out there. If you’ve ever made a zine or mini comic MAKE ONE MORE ISSUE. Come on, you’ve got one more in you! Maybe you were thinking in the back of your head you’d do another issue one day. Now is the time.
Join the group for discussion and more plans. This is just the beginning.
Quimby’s Bookstore is proud to help sponsor this challenge with our friends at Atomic Books in Baltimore, Xerography Debt and Zine World.

Pawn Works Sticker Machine Debuts at Quimby's!
Nicholas Marzullo, owner of the West Side’s Pawn Works gallery and creator of the Pawn Works Sticker Club with New York based partner Seth Mooney, have developed an artist network program using sticker vending machines as the conduit. “We align the images we select with our own history as lifelong street- and graffiti-art aficionados,” he says. ” We believe the sticker is true to the accessibility and visceral nature of street/low-brow art. While it appeals to an age submerged in kitsch, the medium and the vending machines offer ways to deconstruct our childhoods and make the art of established artists from around the world accessible in a cool, cheap way.”
Just a few of the artists participating include: C215, a prolific Paris-based stencil artist and muralist whose splashes of color and meticulous representation of social outcasts, British luminary Eelus, whose dark sense of humor and surreal images bear an uncanny resemblance to those of Banksy, Chicago’s Joe Padilla, as well as The Grocer, who is an an enigmatic street artist with his bold images of, appropriately enough, produce, help make the city Chicago an even bigger component to the project.
Machines can also be found in various venues in New York City such as Brooklynite Gallery.

365 Sketches: A Comedy Sketch A Day For One Year by Joe Jones $40.00 – Don’t miss his event here at Quimby’s on Saturday, August 21st at 7pm featuring the author and some of Chicago’s finest comedic actors performing monologues from 365. What’s this all about? On January 19, 2009, Chicago teacher and playwright Joe Janes decided to write a comedy sketch a day for a year. He did that. When he was done, Don Hall of the WNEP Theater Foundation decided to produce them. All of them. In June of 2010, Don and Joe gathered together over 200 Chicago actors and directors and over eleven nights presented 26 shows each featuring two weeks worth of sketches (although one has 15 scenes). Yep. Crazy. All 365 comedy sketches are collected in this book along with a complete list of directors and actors from the Strawdog shows. Joe teaches comedy writing at The Second City and Columbia College. For more info: 365sketchesbyjoejanes.blogspot.com/Bear in Underwear by Todd Doodler (Blue Apple) $12.99 – We don’t order a lot of kids books. This one was irresistable. And you will think so too, no matter how old you are.
