Zine Club Chicago is putting a bow on 2024 with their annual December online zinemaking workshop led by our own Liz Mason! We’ll be creating mini zines that celebrate our personal highlights of this year.

Liz Mason is a founding member of Zine Club Chicago. She publishes, among other things, Caboose, which won First Runner-Up in the Best Zine Category in the Chicago Reader’s 2023 poll. Her work has been in places like Broken Pencil, Punk Planet, The Zine Yearbook and the back of her friend’s toilets. Zine Club Chicago Poetry Comix Edition, with Mita Mahato, Oct 20th
Join comix artist and poet Mita Mahato for a poetry comix workshop in conjunction with the launch of her new book Arctic Play. Mahato will share her process in making the book as a jumping off point to guide folks in experimenting with poetic forms, color, and collage to make poetry comix of their own. No experience necessary!

Arctic Play is a drama, a dirge, an expedition log, a series of poetic experiments, a comic book. Mapping an Arctic imaginary of beings and landforms onto a shifting stage of woven and layered papers, Mahato conjures geographic and creative uncertainty as the necessary condition for navigating the climate crisis and its sorrows.

She lives in Seattle.

We had such a blast at Zine Camp last year that we’re bringing it back and packing in even more summer fun. Newbies and Zine Club Chicago regulars alike are welcome at Zine Camp 2023, set for 2 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 9 in Picnic Grove 5 at Dan Ryan Woods on Chicago’s Southwest Side. Free!
Camp activities include zinemaking, zine trading, and socializing with fellow self-publishing enthusiasts; a crowd-sourced, collaborative, zine-focused Complaint Chorus by Ayun Halliday: a Zinemaking Workshop by Jude R. Bettridge; and SO. MANY. SNACKS!
We’ll also be hosting a pen pal station so you can strike up a correspondence with one of our out-of-town Zine Club Chicago friends! (Can’t make it to Zine Camp and want a pen pal? Sign up here: tiny.cc/ZineCamp2023PenPals)

Free!In May, Zine Club Chicago is excited to welcome Jude R. Bettridge to lead a workshop that gives Choose Your Own Adventure a zine twist! Jude will demonstrate how to make multiple folded, mini-zine formats that offer readers a chance to explore. Create stories that lead to different outcomes, sending your favorite characters on an epic quest of your choosing!
Join us for Zine Club Chicago In Person: Choose Your Own Adventure Zine Workshop at 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 26 here at the shop. We’ll have zinemaking supplies and snacks on hand! Masks are strongly encouraged when you’re not noshing.
Jude R. Bettridge (they/them/theirs) is a Chicago-based Jack-of-all-trades artist, whose focus shifts from comics and zines to oil painting and fiber sculpture as often as they change their pants. Their comic work draws inspiration from the great Art Spiegelman, Bill Watterson, and Beth Hetland as they depict the daily struggles of being a neurodivergent super-queer social anomaly in a late-stage capitalistic hellscape. Often featuring fantastical characters and their fat cat, Gravy Boat, their work takes on a cynical, sarcastic lens to talk about mental health, trans rights, environmentalism, queerness, socialism, and much more. Is this a coping mechanism? Maybe. In a nutshell, they just want to talk about zines, queerness, and have someone read their comics.
Out-of-town friends, Zine Club Chicago will be back on Zoom with y’all in June with a to-be-announced special guest co-host! Anne Elizabeth Moore Talks Perzines and Memoirs with Quimby’s Online Nov 5th
Anne Elizabeth Moore’s new book Gentrifier: A Memoir (Catapult Books) is ostensibly about a free house the author was awarded in Detroit in 2016. But after she moves in, pets some cats, and gets to know her delightful neighbors, the murky history of her supposedly free house—more costly than expected—comes to light, illuminating the contemporary American housing crisis. Moore writes about gender, policy, and the downside of capitalism (all of it), plus she includes many jokes, so her books are pretty good. She has been self-publishing since she was 11 and will talk about using zines in a writing practice, and memoir in a self-publishing practice.

Hanifin, in what promises to be a lively discussion. Because this is a livestreaming workshop event, viewers are encouraged to come prepared with questions to ask about the differences between perzines (as in personal zines) and memoir, moving from one to the other, and incorporating zines into a writing practice and/or memoir writing into a self-publishing practice. Part workshop, part craft talk, part book discussion, part interactive discussion with the audience, this event promises to be fully unpredictable and most definitely fun.

We’ll have all the supplies you need to create a new zine on the spot or make headway on a work-in-progress. We’ll also be discussing zines we wish we could call Back from the Dead, so please bring your favorite out-of-print titles to share. Learnapalooza Make a Zine Workshop, with Edie Fake 6/28 4pm
Learnapalooza is an annual day of free workshops taught across your neighborhood and open to the public. Classes are taught by community members and local businesses, hosted in 10-20 businesses and community centers across the neighborhood. This will be Learnapalooza’s 5th year in Wicker Park, and there are more than 15 participating hosts, more than 50 classes, and will be between 350-500 attendees.
This year, artist Edie Fake (Gaylord Phoenix, Memory Palaces) will teach you how to make a zine!

Quimby’s Bookstore (and our sister store, Chicago Comics) are proud to be a sponsor of the Ladydrawers Comics Collective exhibition entitled SEX. MONEY. RACE. GENDER, curated by Anne Elizabeth Moore, at Columbia College Chicago’s A+D Gallery, opening June 27th. S.M.R.G. will also feature a series of workshops that explores hot button topics with everything from site-specific murals to performance to empirical conversations to yes, comics.
Beginning with the opening night spectacle, the gallery (Columbia’s A+D Gallery, not Quimby’s) will be activated through fun, radicalthinking, and art making, a space to observe and reflect on ideas of SEX, MONEY, RACE, and GENDER. Matt Madden Comics Seminar at Chicago Comics 8/2
Our sister store, Chicago Comics is proud to present award-winning comic author Matt Madden to the store for a three hour seminar entitled “Checklist For a A New Comic: A Guide to Getting Started.” He’ll walk you through the many considerations you should keep in mind when you embark on creating a new comic, whether a one-pager, a webcomic, or a graphic novel. Madden will help you strategize and come up with a working plan for your next project. He will cover a variety of bases, including:: creative block and coming up with ideas, choosing a format and platform that makes sense, setting goals and scheduling your time so that you can reach them, finding an audience and looking for collaborators and/or publishers. So bring some paper and be ready to take notes on your next big (or small) project! The event begins at 5 and goes until 8. And! Chicago Comics will also be giving away 3 free copies of Matt Madden and Jessica Abel’s new book Mastering Comics to random attendees! Quimby’s welcomes Learnapalooza for a second year. It’s a festival of free workshops, where Chicagoans will share their skills by leading free workshops throughout the day in different places. Quimby’s welcomes “Arty Party” and “Transmission” comics artist Sara Drake, who will be leading comics-making sessions in the afternoon. Her free workshops will be held at these times here at Quimby’s:

Don’t miss a bounty of workshops on Saturday, June 25th, 2011 from 10am to 5pm for the 2nd annual Learnapalooza, a summer festival of learning with nearly 100 free workshops across Wicker Park, led by neighbors, business owners, or you! The workshops are held at a variety of places around Wicker Park, including Quimby’s!
Free workshops will include everything from improv comedy to social entrepreneurship to board games to worm composting and much more. Workshops will be hosted at more than a dozen businesses and organizations, and headquartered at the Wicker Park Art Center. The majority of the workshops are aimed at adults, but there will be a few options for children and families as well. It’s a fun, free way to share your passions, learn new skills, and connect with your neighbors.
