Off-Site: Chicago Zine Fest 2015 – Celebrates its Sixth Year with New Dates and Locations
Quimby’s is proud to help co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest, an annual celebration of self-publishing efforts, is now marking its sixth year. For the 2015 festival, there will be a new date as the festival moves to the month of May, held during the weekend of Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th. The festival also brings its exhibition to a new location, Plumbers’ Union Hall in the West Loop. Come visit Quimby’s at table S07 at the zine exhibition tabling on Saturday, May 9th 11am-6pm there at Plumbers’ Union Hall!
“We’re excited for these changes. It’ll be great to welcome our audience to such a historic Chicago venue,” said festival promotion committee chair John Wawrzaszek.
The festival weekend kicks off Friday May 8th at 5 pm with a panel titled Zines: A Future Craft which will be a discussion with zine creators Jonas, Julia Eff, and Ocean Capewell, moderated by Jenna Freedman. This event is sponsored by The University of Chicago Library. The night continues with a pair of readings. At 7pm join our annual youth reading, Zines: The Next Generation followed by an 8 pm reading by festival exhibitors. CART services for the deaf and hard of hearing will be provided at each of Friday’s events. All events will be held at Access Living, 115 W. Chicago Ave.
The weekend’s main attraction will be a zine exhibition taking place on Saturday May 9th, 11 am- 6 pm. Over 250 zinesters will exhibit their publications, host workshops, and lead panel discussions in the spirit of self-publishing. The exhibition will be held at Plumbers’ Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington Blvd.
Organizing goals for the 2015 fest included increasing the number of festival exhibitors and forming new community partnerships. In choosing a new location for the festival exhibition, there has been room for more tables allowing more exhibitors to showcase their work. The festival registration filled up in record time this year with all tables selling out in under an hour. Nearly half of registered exhibitors will be taking part of CZF for their first time this year. New community partnerships have allowed the festival to schedule programming topics that meet the festival’s mission and support the work of its partner organizations.
“CZF strives to offer diverse programming every year in order to continue to engage our communities in conversations,” says festival programming coordinator Julie Koslowsky.
The zine exhibition will be supported with programming throughout the day including an activity making area, button making presented by Busy Beaver Buttons, and a photo booth provided by Glitter Guts. Workshop topics include radical poetry, interactive performances, resisting assimilation, and hands-on drawing techniques.
“There’s a different experience that we offer at an event like the Chicago Zine Fest where consumers can chat with the zinesters and artists who created the work,” says Koslowsky.
The Chicago Zine Fest is a volunteer-operated event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work aiming to make DIY zine making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact and swap skills. The Chicago Zine Fest 2015 is sponsored by 826CHI, Chicago Publishers Resource Center, CHIRP Radio, InoPrints, The International School of Comics, Perfectly Acceptable Press, The University of Chicago Library, and Quimby’s Bookstore.
CZF 2015 artwork was created by Chicago artist and illustrator Corinne Mucha.
All event spaces are wheelchair accessible. All events are free and open to the public.

Registration for the 2015 Chicago Zine Fest opens this Sunday, February 22 at 12pm (Central Time)! Table space is first come, first served, and it sells out quickly. Chicago Zine Fest Announces 2015 Dates, Exhibition Location and Artwork!
Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest! As per their most recent press release:
CHICAGO- Chicago Zine Fest is thrilled to announce that the dates for our 6th annual festival will be Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th!
The exhibition will be Saturday May 9th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Plumbers Union Hall on the near West Side. This is a new location for the fest’s exhibition. This venue will allow us to add more participants, organization and programming to the expo. Friday May 8th will host our opening panel, as well as a youth reading, and exhibitor reading (information, location and times TBA).
Registration for the exhibition will be open on Sunday, February 22nd at 12PM CST. The festival welcomes self-publishers who release independent zines and comics. Registration occurs through our website.
The artwork for the 2015 festival was designed by Chicago based cartoonist, illustrator, and teaching artist Corinne Mucha (maidenhousefly.com). Final artwork to be released.
Look for future press releases closer to the festival date to include programming information, festival workshop schedule, invited guest panelists and announced festival exhibitors.

Off-site Event: Zine Book Club at CHIPRC "Is It the Future Yet" With Corinne Mucha 2/11
CHIPRC’s Zine Book Club returns in 2015 on Wednesday, February 11th at 7pm at The Chicago Publishers Resource Center (CHIPRC) at 858 N. Ashland Avenue (not Quimby’s). The discussion will feature local comic artist Corinne Mucha’s work, Is It the Future Yet?, which was commissioned exclusively by Quimby’s! Corrine Mucha will be present to join the discussion, sign work and will have other titles available for sale.
Also, bring in your favorite zine/comic from 2014 to discuss and share. Pick up this month’s comic here at Quimby’s bookstore, located at 1854 West North Avenue (while supplies last).
There will be a $3 donation asked at the door. Meet other zinesters, read new work, bring in your favs, be part of the discussion and have a good time. Chicago Publishers Resource Center is located at 858 N Ashland Ave.

Zine & Comics Events: Making Magic Happen Librarians & Zinesters, at Quimby’s 1/30
Join librarians and zine enthusiasts at Quimby’s Bookstore to discuss running a successful zine or comics event – whether it’s a one-hour DIY workshop for teens or a festival with thousands of attendees. Librarians, zinesters, and comics makers will share stories and tips about developing community through events, and then open the floor to your questions. This workshop to learn about promoting comics and zines from successful planners from the Chicago Zine Fest, Chicago Public Library and more.
Featured speakers include: Johnny from Chicago Zine Fest, Julie Koslowsky (Outreach Coordinator for YOUmedia at the Chicago Public Library and CZF) & Joshua for Mid-Michigan Zine Fest.
Coordinated with the 2015 American Library Association Midwinter Conference, this is your chance to meet and talk about zines with some of the 12,000 librarians who will be in Chicago. After the event (and time for browsing), head around the corner to Dimo’s for vegan-friendly pizza (1615 North Damen Avenue).
This event is free and open to the public – anyone interested in zines or libraries is encouraged to attend!

Quimby’s 2015 Zlumber Party 1/31 and 2/1!
Hey zinesters and comics artists! Come to our Zine Slumber Party (Zlumber Party, geddit? Gosh we’re clever.) This is the fourth year in a row we’re inviting you to come in and spend the night with us working on your zine, because we’ve had so much fun doing it in the past. The store closes at 10pm on Sat the 31st and then you’re invited to spend the night here (and yes, you can leave whenever you want). So bring yer jammies and a sleeping bag if you wanna take a break to catch a few zzzz, then leave in the morning with what you’ve been workin’ on. Interested in attending? Quimby’s Zlumber Party Helpful Info Update!
Hi Everybody!
In terms of what to bring, definitely whatever project you’re working on, whether it’s a zine, a comic, a book, a magazine, an artist book — independent publishing knows no bounds!
Be here at 9:30pm this saturday, the 31st (the store closes at 10pm). This is NOT a lock in; you can leave whenever you want. You can stay as late as 8am on sunday morning, which is the official end time for the event.
Wear comfy clothes! Don’t forget your sleeping gear! A sleeping bag if you wanna take a break to catch a few zzzz (or just be comfy), a pillow, footie pajamas, a blanket, slippers…whatever makes you comfy.
We’ll provide some snacks and coffee, but you may want to bring some snacks with you if you like. A good way to make new friends is bring food, is all we’re saying. If you have food sensitivities or allergies please bring whatever nourishment you need to bring to sustain you.
We’ll also provide some office supplies (papers, pens, scissors, staplers, that type of thing), chairs and tables.
One final note: Please don’t feel pressured to feel like you have to finish whatever you’re working on before you leave. If you feel excited to work on your project once you’ve been working on it here, that you’ve started your 2015 off jazzed that you got the creative ball rolling, then we’ve done our job (that’s once of the reasons we do this event in January). When you’re all done with your zine and you want to consign it here, we’re excited to sell it for you. More info about consignment here.

Chicago Zine Fest’s fourth annual Bingo Night fundraiser will be held on Thursday, December, 11 at Logan Bar and Grill, 2230 N California Ave, 7pm. (NOT AT QUIMBY’S.)Zine Fest Bingo is always a great time. Join special guest bingo callers, Chicago based performance duo Mothergirl, Katy Albert and Sophia Hamilton, as they call out the numbers. There is a suggested entry donation of $10 which includes your bingo cards good for multiple rounds. Each round allows for a chance to win!
