  • Off-Site Event: COME IN THE NAME OF CRUMB! at the STOP SMILING Space

    crumbforquimbys

Quimby’s and STOP SMILING present an evening with R. Crumb (or, rather, the documentary about R. Crumb, CRUMB!).*

The new issue of STOP SMILING features an in-depth cover-story interview with the legendary comic-artist provocateur, who rarely speaks to the press. Crumb and Celia Farber, who made her name as an investigative journalist covering AIDS research, discuss her area of expertise as well as his, which makes for a lively and telling dialog.

The Crumb! documentary is a cinematic portrait of the artist as a weird man, and explores Crumb’s traumatized family, his strange sexual tastes, and allusions of racism and sexism that some find rampant and disturbing in his work. From his childhood home to the San Francisco streets where he started Zap Comix, the film sets Crumb in a panoply of settings, all of which come across as somehow unsettling.

Copies of the new issue of STOP SMILING with the R. Crumb cover, as well as an array of R. Crumb merchandise from Quimby’s, will be on hand.

    WHEN: April 2, 2009, 7 p.m.
WHERE: The STOP SMILING Storefront (1371 N Milwaukee Ave., Chicago)

Free drinks will be provided (21+)
To attend, email rsvp@stopsmilingonline.com (subject: Crumb)

*R. Crumb, the actual person, will not be at this event

  • Quimby's History Made: A Marriage Proposal!

    proposal-300x2252
Saturday, February 21st sure was a memorable evening here at Quimby’s. Living Proof zinester Andrew Mall asked his girlfriend to marry him during his reading! And she said yes! Thanks to Aaron Cynic of Diatribe Media and Billy Da Bunny Roberts of Loop Distro for organizing and hosting a good ol’ fashioned Old School Zine Reading featuring Matt Fagan (Meniscus), ReyRey (Stream of Consciousness) and more!

  • Are you into this?

A few of our customers have asked us if there’s any chance we might start a book club. So this is an inquiry to see if that’s something that you’d be interested in, Dear Readers. So! If you are interested, please answer the following questions in an e-mail (cut’n’paste it, yo!) to us at info at quimbys dot com :

Is this a good idea? Lame idea? Only do it if it’s not so feel-good-cheesy-support-groupish or classroomy?

What types of books would you want to read? Fiction? Zine-related books, zines themselves, essays, political, graphic novels? Etc.?

How often would you want to meet? Here? Or somewhere else? What day or night of the week would you want it on? And for how long should it meet? How many people do you feel like should there be as a minimum for it to be fun, effective, etc. so that you don’t feel like you’re the only person at the party?

How do you want it structured? Free form? Someone mediating it? Or like, no format, just see how it plays out?

What things would be necessary for it to be worth doing or for you to participate?

What else do you want to tell us about this? Comments? Anyone? Anyone? Is anybody out there? Hello? Is this thing on? (tap tap) Testing testing, can I get some more vocals on the monitor?

  • Chunklet #20 Is Here!

Now in stock for the awesomest price ever of $9.99 for 134 pages of the usual tiny font, the 20th issue of Chunklet (20 issues, 15 years!). Don’t miss Whirlyball with such bands as Arcade Fire, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and countless others. Laugh-out-loud funny Rock Sniglets, Music Journalist Application Form, Zine Fair Pick-Up Lines (That Failed Miserably) [“I’m not the do-it-yourself type…I’d rather do it with you.”] — This is rockin’. That’s why this mag only comes out once every 3 years, because of its high hilariousness quotient. Chunklet makes fun of pretty much everything the cool kids listen to, which is why I love it. More music mags should have this many opinions, instead of just being a conglomeration of press releases the publicity agents are sending out. I mean, really, does EVERY magazine need to have Cat Power on the cover with varying pictures from the same photo shoot?

  • Don't Miss Our Back to Art School Poster Sale and Last Chance Zine Extravanganza

We’ve pulled them and put them in one space all together so that you won’t lose out on the opportunity to drool over them and make them your own. But don’t wait too long! Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
