COMIC BOOK ARTIST TURNS CROSS-COUNTRY MOVE INTO CROSS-COUNTRY TOUR

Starting July 2008, recent Master of Fine Arts graduate and Autobiographical Cartoonist, Ryan Claytor, will begin a comic book signing tour to promote the release of his self-published master’s thesis on autobiographical comics.  Claytor says, “I finished school, my girlfriend got a great job out of state (and was able to swing me a partner hire), and I have a new book coming out.  It all seemed to come together serendipitously.”

Claytor is most well-known for publishing his all-ages autobiographical comic book series entitled, “And Then One Day” under the moniker, “Elephant Eater Comics.”  Claytor recently announced the final line-up for his ambitious North American Comic Book Tour, which will take him to 17 different locations in 10 states on his way from California to his new home in Lansing, MI.

It is an odd choice to move from California to Michigan.  Aside from the new job and a significant other, when asked about some benefits of moving to the mid-west from the west coast, he simply stated, “I am a very sweaty fellow.  My hands are like waterfalls.  I think the cold weather might make me function like a normal human being.”

Claytor will be getting to all of the stops on his tour in his little brown car he affectionately calls “Squirrelly,” which incidentally has 350,000 miles on its original engine.  When asked about the feasibility of a North American tour in such an experienced car, Claytor replied, “I know it sounds silly to take this large of a trip in such a ‘seasoned’ vehicle, but it’s been really good to me and I’ve asked several mechanics to make sure it could survive a cross-country road trip.  They’re all surprised it looks as good as it does.”

You can meet Ryan Claytor in person as he comes through town to sign his autobiographical comics and limited edition prints at Quimby’s
Additional tour and book information can be found at Ryan Claytor’s website: www.ElephantEater.com

  • Erotic Harry Potter Night

Erotic Harry Potter Night at Quimby’s

Who knew that the vanguard of erotic fiction could be found amongst the devotees of J. K. Rowling’s boy wizard Harry Potter? Quimby’s, of course! Critically-acclaimed erotica writer Cecilia Tan comes to Chicago under her nom de plume “Ravenna” to gather together some of the world’s best-known writers of erotic fanfiction for a group reading on Wednesday, August 6 at 7pm.

“Fanfic is the hottest stuff,” says Tan, who wrote sexy fan stories as a teenager featuring her friends meeting the teen idols of the day, but moved into writing Harry Potter fanfic in recent years after establishing a career as a leading erotica author and editor. On tour to support the release of her latest book of erotic short stories (White Flames, published by Running Press, 2008), Tan’s visit coincides in Chicago with Terminus, a huge Harry Potter fan convention. “Erotic fanfic has its roots in the mainstream, but then subverts it completely.”

Joining Tan in this erotic celebration will be two authors from Chicago, and from as far away as Copenhagen, Toronto, and Kansas City. Come expecting to hear short, homoerotic excerpts pairing Harry with Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, and other characters. A special commemorative zine, “The Erotic Harry Potter,” is being produced specially for the event and will only be available through the weekend.

    Author Bio:
“Cecilia Tan is simply one of the most important writers, editors, and innovators in contemporary American erotic literature,” says Susie Bright (Best American Erotica). Tan is the author of the books White Flames, The Velderet, Black Feathers, and Telepaths Don’t Need Safewords, editor of many anthologies such as Sex In The System, Cowboy Lover, The MILF Anthology, and Best Fantastic Erotica, and the founder of Circlet Press, an independent publisher dedicated to erotic science fiction and fantasy.

The lineup also includes authors Alchemia Dent and Bugland from Chicago, Kabal from Copenhagen, GatewayGirl from Massachusetts, Mijan from Kansas City, and Mechiaeh from
    Nashville.

  • Eddie Campbell at Quimby’s!

Join comic artist Eddie Campbell as he signs copies of his new graphic novel THE AMAZING REMARKABLE MONSIEUR LEOTARD (First Second).

‘He flies through the air with the greatest of ease – the daring young man on the flying trapeze!’

Step right up, Ladies and Gentlemen, for a glorious spectacle of graphic literature beyond your wildest imaginings, in which young Etienne discovers that replacing his uncle as the Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard, world-renowned acrobat and head of a circus troupe, is every bit as difficult as it appears to be. Etienne is swept up in wonder and work even as he struggles to keep up his grandiose façade, while every day his chances for happiness slip further away.  For Etienne, taking a stand for his own happiness is as daring as any trick the Amazing Remarkable Leotard could perform.  Eddie Campbell and Dan Best bring to life the historical story of the daring young man on the flying trapeze in a tale filled with wonders and marvels.

Eddie Campbell has earned an international following. For over 25 years, he has blazed a trail in the world of graphic novels, and his work has earned nearly every honor in the field, including the Eisner, Ignatz, and Harvey awards.

With Alan Moore he created the towering opus From Hell, later adapted by Hollywood. Among the multitude of solo works he has produced, the epic series Bacchus brings the adventures of the Greek god of wine bang up to date, along the way adding such anomalies as the Eyeball Kid to the ancient pantheon. His autobiographical Alec has also garnered praise, notably for the memorable graphic novels Alec: the King Canute Crowd, and Alec: how to be an Artist.

Our friends at Co-op Image Youth are holding a Karaoke Tournament Fundraiser at Ronny’s. If you’re in Chicago this Friday (June 27th) you should come, even if you’re not singing; karaoke singers need an audience! Here’s their details:

Be the Karaoke King/Queen you always knew you could be! Or just be mercilessly entertained! On Friday, June 27th Ronny’s (210. Suggested donation of $51 N. California Ave) will host Chicago’s first, one and only, Karaoke Tournament: LOUDER THAN YOUR MOM! at the door, contestants get in for free. Karaoke power-couple Joe and Liz Mason will MC the event as the First Round begins at 9 o’clock. There will be four rounds of competition. This event is held to benefit Cooperative Image Group.

Here’s how it will work: Karaoke contestants will compete in the contest, much like a marathon. They will be required to have a minimum of three sponsors who can donate up to four songs (depending on how far they expect their contestant to go) at $10 a song. A panel of audience judges will be rating the performances on a scale of 1- 10. Four finalists will receive a prize and trophy designed by Co-op Image Youth. The winner will receive a prize, trophy, and cash.

Incorporated in 2003, Cooperative Image Group is an interdisciplinary arts education and social entrepreneurship organization that facilitates programs with youth ages 6-21. Located in Humboldt Park, Co-op Image works with over 700 youth per year out of its Corner Art Center and approximately 400 additional community members through a number of outreach satellite projects. The programs Co-op Image creates include the production of a cooking show aired on CAN-TV, a screen-printing and design business, an audio/visual recording studio, mural painting, glass sculpting, documentary film-making and more. Co-op Image seeks funding through several channels, including a number of creative fundraisers and benefits, earned income, individual donors, and foundation and government grants. Benefits like LOUDER THAN YOUR MOM! account for approximately 30% of Co-op Image’s annual budget.
