Fire Relief for AK Press & Friends
Our friends at AK Press and 1984 Printing had a fire. AK Press is a publisher and distributor of many subversive zines and books that we carry here at Quimby’s, and they share a building with 1984 Printing, as well as other residents. Help them get back on their feet by contributing to their relief fund on GoFundMe.Here is what they posted on their GoFundMe site:
In the early morning of March 21, the building behind ours caught fire. Two people lost their lives. The fire moved to the mixed-use warehouse building we share with 1984 Printing and 30+ residents. Everyone in our building got out safely, but several units were completely destroyed. There was extensive water and smoke damage to other units, including the ones occupied by AK Press and 1984 Printing.
On the afternoon of March 24th, the City of Oakland red-tagged our building, which prohibits us from occupying it. We don’t know how long this will last, but it obviously means we can’t conduct business as usual.
We know how many of you support what AK Press does and the important role it plays in independent and radical publishing. A lot of you have been asking what is the best way to help us in the midst of this chaos and disruption. In fact, the outpouring of support and mutual aid has been pretty damn amazing. There was a small army of people here helping with clean-up over the weekend, and we’ve already raised some emergency funds from generous donations via PayPal (thank you!!) while we were working out the logistics of coordinating a larger fund drive.
But we and our neighbors can all still use help, and we want to make sure everyone affected benefits from the same kind of mutual aid we have seen. In our case, while we have lost thousands of books and pamphlets, our first concern is the smaller presses who we distribute. Several of them had inventory damaged. We want to make sure we are able to pay them so that they can keep going and reprint their books. Second, we are concerned about all the work we are currently unable to do: the books not being shipped out, the files not getting sent to the printer while we are kept out of the building. We are working out the details of our insurance, of what stock is and isn’t covered, but we won’t see any insurance money for quite a while and we’ll definitely need some support until that happens, and to make sure our losses aren’t passed on to other publishers we distribute.
Our neighbors at 1984 Printing had a ton of paper, materials, jobs in progress, and computers damaged. Residents of the building lost varying percentages of their belongings. Some lost everything.
So, if you can help, it’s pretty simple: whatever you donate will be evenly split three ways between AK Press, 1984 Printing, and our affected neighbors.
And all of us will be very, very grateful.

CAKE Bake Auction Fundraiser at No Nation Art Gallery on April 25th
The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) will be holding its annual art auction fundraiser at 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 25th, at the NO NATION art gallery, located at 1542 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The event, called CAKE Bake, will be hosted by Lyra Hill, a well-known Chicago cartoonist and filmmaker.
The event will feature live and silent auctions of over 30 pieces of art by cartoonists from Chicago and elsewhere, including Jeffrey Brown, Ivan Brunetti, Lilli Carre, Anders Nilsen, Lucy Knisley, Edie Fake, Keiler Roberts, and Anya Davidson. In addition, live comics readings will be performed by Lyra Hill, John Porcellino, Sara Heymann of the Mortville Collective, and Ben Marcus.
Max Morris, a member of CAKE’s organizing committee, said, “We are very excited to hold CAKE Bake, which has been a great success for us in the past. As a volunteer-run non-profit event, we rely on fundraisers like this to make each year’s CAKE a success, and we greatly appreciate the support we get from the local comics community, especially all the pieces of art that our great cartoonists have donated. We’re really excited about this year’s CAKE, in which we’re going to be offering hands-on workshops for the first time, as well as programming featuring our amazing special guests, including Jillian Tamaki, Eleanor Davis, Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Dash Shaw, and Zak Sally. We think this year’s CAKE is going to be the best one yet, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop trying to keep making it better and better.”
The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo [CAKE] is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alternative comics’ most talented artists– past, present and future. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers.The Fourth Annual CAKE will take place on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N Halsted Ave. in Chicago.

Off-Site: Chicago Zine Fest 2015 – Celebrates its Sixth Year with New Dates and Locations
Quimby’s is proud to help co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest, an annual celebration of self-publishing efforts, is now marking its sixth year. For the 2015 festival, there will be a new date as the festival moves to the month of May, held during the weekend of Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th. The festival also brings its exhibition to a new location, Plumbers’ Union Hall in the West Loop. Come visit Quimby’s at table S07 at the zine exhibition tabling on Saturday, May 9th 11am-6pm there at Plumbers’ Union Hall!
“We’re excited for these changes. It’ll be great to welcome our audience to such a historic Chicago venue,” said festival promotion committee chair John Wawrzaszek.
The festival weekend kicks off Friday May 8th at 5 pm with a panel titled Zines: A Future Craft which will be a discussion with zine creators Jonas, Julia Eff, and Ocean Capewell, moderated by Jenna Freedman. This event is sponsored by The University of Chicago Library. The night continues with a pair of readings. At 7pm join our annual youth reading, Zines: The Next Generation followed by an 8 pm reading by festival exhibitors. CART services for the deaf and hard of hearing will be provided at each of Friday’s events. All events will be held at Access Living, 115 W. Chicago Ave.
The weekend’s main attraction will be a zine exhibition taking place on Saturday May 9th, 11 am- 6 pm. Over 250 zinesters will exhibit their publications, host workshops, and lead panel discussions in the spirit of self-publishing. The exhibition will be held at Plumbers’ Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington Blvd.
Organizing goals for the 2015 fest included increasing the number of festival exhibitors and forming new community partnerships. In choosing a new location for the festival exhibition, there has been room for more tables allowing more exhibitors to showcase their work. The festival registration filled up in record time this year with all tables selling out in under an hour. Nearly half of registered exhibitors will be taking part of CZF for their first time this year. New community partnerships have allowed the festival to schedule programming topics that meet the festival’s mission and support the work of its partner organizations.
“CZF strives to offer diverse programming every year in order to continue to engage our communities in conversations,” says festival programming coordinator Julie Koslowsky.
The zine exhibition will be supported with programming throughout the day including an activity making area, button making presented by Busy Beaver Buttons, and a photo booth provided by Glitter Guts. Workshop topics include radical poetry, interactive performances, resisting assimilation, and hands-on drawing techniques.
“There’s a different experience that we offer at an event like the Chicago Zine Fest where consumers can chat with the zinesters and artists who created the work,” says Koslowsky.
The Chicago Zine Fest is a volunteer-operated event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work aiming to make DIY zine making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact and swap skills. The Chicago Zine Fest 2015 is sponsored by 826CHI, Chicago Publishers Resource Center, CHIRP Radio, InoPrints, The International School of Comics, Perfectly Acceptable Press, The University of Chicago Library, and Quimby’s Bookstore.
CZF 2015 artwork was created by Chicago artist and illustrator Corinne Mucha.
All event spaces are wheelchair accessible. All events are free and open to the public.

Josh Simmons Reads From Black River 5/7
Josh Simmons returns with his first full-length graphic novel since 2007’s acclaimed House. A group of women, one man, and two dogs are making their way through a post-apocalyptic world in search of a city that supposedly still has electricity and some sort of civilization. Along the way, they go to a comedy club, take a drug called Gumdrop, and encounter gangs of men who are fools, lunatics, or murderous sadists. In other words, all manner of terrors.
Simmons is one of the field’s most distinctive voices in the genre of horror, (The Furry Trap, House) and this full-length graphic novel is his best work yet – echoing director John Carpenter’s perfect tick-tock pacing, as well as Shirley Jackson’s ability to transcend genre and turn it into literature.

Josh Simmons was born in Connecticut in 1977. He is the creator of the graphic novels House, Jessica Farm Volume One, and The Furry Trap. He currently lives in New Haven, CT.

At each event, new self published zine and comic titles will be selected to read and discussed. This month’s community partner, Stranger Danger Zine Distro select this month’s work to read: Shotgun Seamstress #7 by Osa Atoe. In this issue, Osa shares her experience with booking woman-positive, queer-positive, all-ages DIY shows in New Orleans, detailing the joy and struggle found in organizing such a project. Don’t forget, you can also bring in your favorite titles and come join the discussion!
