    Quimby’s is proud to help co-sponsor CAKE — The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (June 1st & 2nd at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N Halsted), a weekend fest featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more. The night before the fest join comics artists for a special edition of Drink n’ Draw where comics artists and educators, Aaron Renier (author of Spiral-Bound, Walker Bean, and Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon) and Alex Nall (author of Teaching Comics, Let Some Word That Is Heard Be Yours, Lawns) will lead a series of drawing games and activities! Come out for a fun time featuring refreshments, socializing and secret prizes!

  • Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) Kick-off at Quimby's: 5 Cartoonists 1 City: Minneapolis Showcase

     

    This year’s CAKE Kick-off event is a spotlight on one of the Midwest’s greatest comics presses, Uncivilized Books. Come to hear Zak Sally read from his new memoir book cataloguing the 80’s & 90’s music scene! Tom Kaczynski read new comics on immigration & nostalgia! M.S. Harkness will read from Tinderella, an autobiographical comic about online dating, living poor and being a dumb 20-something! Jenny Schmid read White Supremacists are Human Farts, a comic created with her 10 year old adopted daughter! Tim Sievert read from The Clandestinauts, his new comic based on RPG campaigns, a queasy mix of violent and clever, flying by the seat of your pants storytelling!

  • Quimby's Welcomes R. Sikoryak In Conversation with Charles C. Valauskas 7/11

    In the new graphic novel Terms & Conditions (Drawn & Quarterly), R. Sikoryak tackles the monstrously and infamously dense legal document, iTunes Terms and Conditions, the contract everyone agrees to but no one reads.  In a word for word 94-page adaptation, Sikoryak hilariously turns the agreement on its head – each page features an avatar of Apple cofounder and legendary visionary Steve Jobs juxtaposed with a different classic strip such as Mort Walker’s Beatle Bailey, or a contemporary graphic novel such as Craig Thompson’s Blankets or Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis.

    “Mischievous, pastiche-heavy artist Robert Sikoryak…upped the difficulty level for his long-term conceptual project: Instead of abridging a book, he lifted the complete text of Apple’s mind-numbing corporate boilerplate, which users must agree to before accessing iTunes, and mashed it up with art invoking more than a century of comics.”—New York Times

    R. Sikoryak is the author of Masterpiece Comics (Drawn & Quarterly). His comics and illustrations have appeared in the New Yorker, The Onion, GQ, MAD, SpongeBob Comics, and Nickelodeon Magazine, as well as on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Sikoryak is in the speakers program of the New York Council of the Humanities, and he teaches in the illustration department at Parsons The New School for Design and at The Center for Cartoon Studies.     Quimby’s welcomes Gabrielle Bell, Lucy Knisley, Emil Ferris and C. Spike Trotman as read their recent work as a kick-off for the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE). This event is at Quimby’s on June 9th at 7pm, but the tabling exhibition happens June 10th & 11th at the Center on Halsted.

    CAKE is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alter- native comics’ most talented artists– past, present and future. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers.

    Gabrielle Bell was born in London, England and raised in California. She is the author of six books, including The Voyeurs, Truth is Fragmentary and most recently, Everything is Flammable. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

    Emil Ferris is the author of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters – Part 1 (Fantagraphics). She is also a painter, writer, illustrator and sculptor for the toy industry.

    Lucy Knisley is an award-winning comic artist and author who specializes in personal, confessional comics that deal with memory, travel, family and traditions. Her latest graphic novel, Something New; Tales from a Makeshift Bride, deals with her struggle to modernize and equalize her wedding, and the meaning behind many matrimonial traditions.

    Spike was born in DC, grew up in MD, and lives in IL, with a dog and a man. She’s the founder of Iron Circus Comics, responsible for strange and amazing books such Poorcraft, the Smut Peddler series and more.

    Ok, so a lot of things happened in 1991: with George H. W. Bush still in office, the Gulf War came to an end, the indie comics scene was still recovering from the so-called “black and white implosion,” Superman had about a year left to live, and Nirvana released Nevermind. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Steven Svymbersky opened a little shop on Damen Avenue that, he said, would “carry every cool—bizarre—strange—dope—queer—surreal—weird publication ever written and published,” a place where you could discover, he added, “something you never even knew could exist.” A quarter of a century later, Quimby’s, stuffed with comics and zines and poetry and novels and magazines and newspapers and other paper things that don’t even have a name yet, remains one of the premier bookshops in North America. Jake Austen, editor and publisher of the legendary Chicago music and comics zine Roctober, will moderate a conversation with zinemaker Liz Mason and cartoonists Gabby Schulz (a.k.a. Ken Dahl) and CAKE Special Guest Laura Park (Do Not Disturb My Waking Dream) about the history of Quimby’s and its legacy of strangeness and delight. Who’s bringing the cake? This panel is sponsored by The Center for Cartoon Studies.

    CAKE is excited to present a signing event for Kramers Ergot 9, with CAKE Special Guest Sammy Harkham. Joining the signing will be contributors Andy Burkholder, Anya Davidson, Kevin Huizenga, Patrick Kyle, John Pham, and Lale Westvind.

  • Announcing the 2nd Annual TRANSIT Residency for CAKE 2016!

    CAKE is proud to announce our continuing partnership with Transit Residency and Chicago Public Resources Center (ChiPRC) as applications open for the second annual inbound comics artist residency!

    Transit Residency is looking for non-Chicago-based cartoonists and zinesters to apply for a chance to spend the 2 weeks leading up to CAKE (May 29 – June 12) creating work at the beautiful ChiPRC studio/workspace. The winner of this juried residency is awarded a stipend of $1000 to help cover travel and lodging expenses. They will also receive a free table space at CAKE as well as integration into programming at CAKE 2016!

    Last year Transit and ChiPRC hosted Ignatz nominee and Society of Illustrators Gold Medal winner Roman Muradov, who wrote about his experience here for the Transit blog. We hope all of our out of town exhibitors, friends, and visitors will apply! For more information, please follow this link.
