When I had my bat mitzvah in 1986 there wasn’t much stress on me to participate in community service. The priorities of my world focused on finding the few naughty sentences in Sweet Valley High book #3 (Playing With Fire, if you must know), eating Spree from the White Hen behind Tracy Cohen’s house, and seeing which MTV VJ was hosting that hour. At that age, I was more excited to finish this Jewish coming of age ritual so I wouldn’t have to go to Hebrew school anymore. But the actual idea of the bar or bat mitzvah is that one doesn’t just come of age, they also do some good deeds, especially seeing as how mitzvah roughly translates to commandment to doing an act of kindness. I think the kindest thing I did as a preteen was agreeing to mow the lawn. So this zine was helpful in putting my background in perspective: as the editors say, Starfish to Soliarity focuses on “how to devote energy to social justice meaningfully (and Jewishly).” It’s never too late to learn how to do some good in the world, no matter what your background is. -Liz M.
